formatFrameSize

DEFINITION
Help

The descriptor formatFrameSize indicates the horizontal and vertical resolution of a format type. It may be expressed in pixels, pixels per inch, or in the case of ATSC digital TV, a combination of pixels measured horizontally vs. the number of pixels of image/resolution data stacked vertically (interlaced and progressive scan).

GUIDELINES
FOR USAGE

Help

Best practice is to select from a picklist of values.

If a static image is the media item being described, the horizontal x vertical resolution will typically need to entered as an "other" option or customized data entry, depending on the information or digital asset management system in use.

Note that in the ATSC standards, the different frame sizes are colloquially referenced by the number of vertical pixels displayed and by the interlaced or progressive scan mode with which the signal is produced, distributed, and displayed.

Consequently, the ATSC standard known as 1080i measures 1920 pixels horizontally and 1080 pixels vertically, in an interlaced scan mode. A 720p signal measures 1280 pixels horizontally and 720 pixels vertically, in a progressive scan mode.

For a comprehensive review of ATSC TV resolutions, read the Wikipedia article entitled ATSC.

For a review of different scanning methods, read the Wikipedia articles entitled Progressive Scan and Interlace Scan.
