|
This sample is part of a group of related metadata records. There is a full-length digital video file posted to an online VOD system. K-12 schools and higher education institutions have access to not only the full-length version, but also any of three shorter length segments derived from the parent asset.
Record #07: Full-length program-Utah Landforms
Record #08: Segment 1-The Colorado Plateau
Record #09: Segment 2-The Rocky Mountains
Record #10: Segment 3-The Great Basin (this record)
The three shorter segments have their own unique intellectual content descriptions when compared to the parent asset. Therefore, all four assets (full-length + 3 segments) are captured in 4 separate metadata records in PBCore.
Each is linked to the others (parent and sibling) by repeating the container PBCoreRelation and identifying each file by a unique identifier within the VOD system.
Each asset also exists as two renditions; the container pbcoreInstantiation is repeated in order to capture the format information for both QuickTime and WindowsMedia versions.
Because these digital videos are intended for distribution to K-12 as well as higher education, state core curriculum standards (for Utah) and targeted academic disciplines (higher ed) are captured in extensions to PBCore.
Additional rights management metadata fields are also added as extensions to PBCore, although the discrete fields have also been concatenated into a (PBCore compliant) combined statement for the pbcoreRightsSummary data field. |

description |
The Great Basin, which is located mostly in Utah and Nevada, is the northern part of the larger Basin and Range physiographic province. A large majority of Utah's portion of the Great Basin is called the Bonneville Basin because it lay underneath ancient Lake Bonneville. The lowest part of the Bonneville Basin, and of the Great Basin, is covered by the Great Salt Lake, a remnant of the ancient lake. The Great Salt Lake is about 4200 feet above sea level and is on the average about 30 feet deep.
It is believed that the mountains of the Great Basin are fault bloc in origin, the same as the Wasatch and Sierra Nevada Mountains that border it. The mountains have formed along a generally north-south axis and have valleys or basins separating them. Both the mountains and the basins tend to be about 25-50 miles long and 15-20 miles wide. Many of the basins are self-contained, meaning that they drain internally and are areas of accumulation.
The landform of the northern part of the Great Basin in Utah is not typical because it is covered and modified by the salt deposits of the Great Salt Lake Desert and by the lake itself. Instead of a series of mountains and basins it is mostly table-flat terrain with a few features that rise above it. The well known Bonneville Speedway, site of many world land speed records, is on the Salt Flats close to Wendover on the Utah-Nevada border. |

INSTANTIATIONS
& FORMATS |
This Content Class contains metadata elements that identify the nature of the media asset as it exists in some form or format in the physical world or digitally.
There is a single parent container, with 3 sub-containers, and a total of 28 elements in the Instantiation & Formats grouping. For each new instantiation or format for a media asset/title, the entire parent container can be repeated.
|
EXTENSIONS |
This Content Class contains additional descriptions that have been crafted by organizations outside of the PBCore Project. These extensions fulfill the metadata requirements for these outside groups as they identify and describe their own types of media with specialized, custom terminologies unique to their needs and community requirements.
There is a single container and a total of 2 elements as a starter kit for the addition of metadata extensions to the PBCore. |
