TYPE OF METADATA RECORD:

Media Type:
  Moving Image

Instantiations/Formats:
Digital video file, segment (related to a full-length parent & 2 siblings)

Comments:

This sample is part of a group of related metadata records. There is a full-length digital video file posted to an online VOD system. K-12 schools and higher education institutions have access to not only the full-length version, but also any of three shorter length segments derived from the parent asset.

Record #07: Full-length program-Utah Landforms
Record #08: Segment 1-The Colorado Plateau (this record)
Record #09: Segment 2-The Rocky Mountains
Record #10: Segment 3-The Great Basin

The three shorter segments have their own unique intellectual content descriptions when compared to the parent asset. Therefore, all four assets (full-length + 3 segments) are captured in 4 separate metadata records in PBCore.

Each is linked to the others (parent and sibling) by repeating the container PBCoreRelation and identifying each file by a unique identifier within the VOD system.

Each asset also exists as two renditions; the container pbcoreInstantiation is repeated in order to capture the format information for both QuickTime and WindowsMedia versions.

Because these digital videos are intended for distribution to K-12 as well as higher education, state core curriculum standards (for Utah) and targeted academic disciplines (higher ed) are captured in extensions to PBCore.

Additional rights management metadata fields are also added as extensions to PBCore, although the discrete fields have also been concatenated into a (PBCore compliant) combined statement for the pbcoreRightsSummary data field.

  Element description

The largest of the provinces in Utah is the Colorado Plateau. It has been described as a land of layered flat lying sedimentary rock. The story of the earth's movement can often be read in the tilt of the layered strata. Wihin Utah's portion of the Colorado Plateau are five national parks, five national monuments, a national recreation area, and several state parks. It has one of the largest deposits of hydrocarbons in the world--coal, oil, oil shale, tar sands, gilsonite, and natural gas. Sandstone is the most common rock of the plateau, but there are also limstones, shales, conglomerates, and other sedimentaries. Intrusive and extrusive igneous materials are abundant in several regions. Earthquakes, faulting, fracturing, folding, or upwarping, have all helped to shape the landform.

The Colorado Plateau is composed of three sub-regions: the Uinta Basin, the High Plateaus, and the most recognized region of Utah, the Canyonlands. Magnificent mountains, huge mesas, small buttes, lonely spires, majestic natural bridges, delicate arches and wide-open spaces are commonplace.

EXTENSIONS

This Content Class contains additional descriptions that have been crafted by organizations outside of the PBCore Project. These extensions fulfill the metadata requirements for these outside groups as they identify and describe their own types of media with specialized, custom terminologies unique to their needs and community requirements.

There is a single container and a total of 2 elements as a starter kit for the addition of metadata extensions to the PBCore.
