Definition

Use the element RIGHTS.USAGE to identify information about rights held in and over a resource, particularly regarding how the resource may be used, played out, or distributed, eg., for broadcast, for World Wide Web, or for education/classroom use. Information held by this element should help answer questions about when, where and how a resource may be used. [ see the DCMI Definition ]

Guidelines for Usage

Typically, the RIGHTS.USAGE element will contain a rights management statement for the resource, or will reference a service providing such information. Rights information often encompasses Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), Copyright, and various Property Rights. If the Rights element is absent, no assumptions can be made about the status of these and other rights with respect to the resource. Information about Reproduction Rights and a general flag indicating if there are "open" or "restricted" rights are described in the elements RIGHTS.REPRODUCTION and RIGHTS.ACCESS, respectively.
