What does RSS Do?

RSS is an acronym that stands for Really Simple Syndication. Many folks embrace RSS technology because they are inundated with news and updates about their industry, business, and technology. RSS offers a way to manage the overload of headlines, at the same time providing a simple way to alert you to "new" information that has just been published.

PBCore is providing an "RSS Feed" that contains the latest news and updates about the Public Broadcasting Metadata Dictionary Project and the PBCore metadata elements, their implementation, and use. An "RSS Feed" directs our latest news to an "RSS Reader." The Reader manages your various feeds and alerts you to Feeds that have been updated with new content.

What is the Orange Badge Labeled RSS?

This badge is showing up on many websites that offer news items, especially if these items update regularly. Of course, one way to get the news is to use a website's built-in web links to announcements. The PBCore website has such a set of links on its home page, http://www.pbcore.org. If you can navigate a web page, you can read the announcements.

Another method is to use an RSS Feed. The orange badge (or some other color) does two things: (1) indicates that an RSS Feed is available, and (2) provides you with the Internet address for an RSS Feed.

The address for an RSS Feed is added to an RSS Reader. The Reader allows you to keep your own personalized collection of news and events and relieves you from visiting multiple websites to see if anything new is available. See "How do I View an RSS Feed" for more information.

How do I View an RSS Feed
about PBCore Announcements & News ?

A typical way to view an RSS Feed is to use an RSS News Reader or RSS News Aggregator. These programs allow you to collect, update, and display RSS News Feeds of interest. A partial list of available RSS News Readers (some free, some paid) is provided below.

INSTRUCTIONS: Here are the steps to add an RSS News Feed to your RSS News Reader. After you've done this the first time, your News Reader should manage any updates that are generated by the PBCore website...

      1. Click on the RSS orange badge.
      2. Another web page will open up with essentially a glob of words and or codes. Don't worry, this raw data isn't what you're expected to decipher.
      3. See the URL in your web browser's Address Bar? Copy that to your clipboard. For PBCore's RSS News Feed, it will be: http://www.pbcore.utah.edu/RSS/PBCoreUpdates.xml
      4. Open your chosen RSS News Reader program.
      5. In your News Reader, create a new feed, using whatever menu or commands your software offers.
      6. When you create a new feed, you will be asked to provide the RSS News Feed URL. For PBCore, paste the PBCore RSS News Feed URL (http://www.pbcore.utah.edu/RSS/PBCoreUpdates.xml) into the appropriate blank.
      7. As the PBCore web manager generates updates to PBCore Announcements & News, your RSS News Reader should alert you to new content. From this point forward, you can ignore the RSS orange badge on the PBCore website.

INSTRUCTIONS: SHORT-CUT METHOD: An alternative method to getting the Internet address for the PBCore RSS News Feed is to...

      1. On the page with the RSS badge, "Right-Click" (Windows OS) or "CNTRL-Click (Mac OS) on the orange RSS badge.
      2. Depending on your browser, select the option that copies the "link" or "web address" to your computer's clipboard.
      3. Open your chosen RSS News Reader program.
      4. In your News Reader, create a new feed, using whatever menu or commands your software offers.
      5. When you create a new feed, you will be asked to provide the RSS News Feed URL. For PBCore, paste the PBCore RSS News Feed URL (http://www.pbcore.utah.edu/RSS/PBCoreUpdates.xml) into the appropriate blank.
      6. As the PBCore web manager generates updates to PBCore Announcements & News, your RSS News Reader should alert you to new content. From this point forward, you can ignore the RSS orange badge on the PBCore website.

NOTE: Some web browsers will automatically interpret the RSS news feed for you and show the headlines and summaries. Don't freak out if the other two methods aren't happening for you and your web browser becomes "more than helpful" of its own accord.
